PAPER PACKAGING IN FOOD DELIVERY: A COMIECO’S STUDY

20-11-2021

Comieco, with the editorial staff of “Il Gusto” and the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo has explored – during the Golosaria fair in Milan – the characteristics of the packaging used for food delivery.

It has been shown how restaurants prefer cellulosic packaging: paper and cartonboard packaging, combining performance, safety and sustainability, are confirmed as valid allies of the ecological transition in the field of food delivery, which grew by 17% in 2020.

Comieco (Italian Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of fiber-based packaging) has investigated the choices and habits of restaurateurs, analyzing the packaging used by 40 Italian restaurants located in Milan, Turin, Rome and Naples and telling the world of food delivery from their point of view. The materials, the origins, the certifications and the effectiveness of the different types of packaging used in the food delivery were the topics at the center of the debate.

All packages analyzed are predominantly paper-based. This shows how paper and cartonboard, thanks to their recyclability characteristics, are particularly suitable materials to be used in food delivery. In addition, paper and cartonboard are constantly the subject of research and innovation in order to combine more and more security of the content and sustainability of the container, confirming themselves as valuable allies in the fight against food waste thanks, for example, to solutions such as nanocellulose, which ensures perfect food preservation, a high degree of recyclability and great application possibilities.
