Cartonboard is once again a fast-growing sector and a leader of circular economy: 82% of consumers consider cartonboard to be a reliable and sustainable material, and 86% (5% more than in 2019) prefer carton packaging rather than plastic packaging. Indeed, cartonboard is a long-term solution, and it has been more and more used for the launch of new packaging solutions, especially in the food and chemical products markets, among those aiming to reduce carbon impact.
After a difficult year, characterized by rising energy and raw material prices, we are therefore ready to start again towards new goals of growth and sustainability.
In an interview with the magazine Pap’ Argus, Michele Bianchi, CEO of RDM Group and recently appointed President of Pro Carton, explains strategies and goals for 2023. First and foremost, to reduce the environmental impact of industrial activities to the point of making the mills carbon neutral and even energy producers for neighbouring towns, considering that even before the energy crisis and the consequent prices rise, the cartonboard sector was using 60% energy from renewable sources.
But in order to achieve such an ambitious goal, it is necessary to create cooperation and new synergies with other players and stakeholders, coordinating activities and fostering the exchange of know-how and information that promotes innovation and creativity. This will also allow to give a clearer and more unified framework at European level, ensuring greater stability and longevity for the sector.
