FROM FOOD-DELIVERY TO LUXURY FASHION, PACKAGING IS CHANGING

09-03-2021

With the increasing public attention towards sustainability, packaging as we know it has changed shape and size, becoming increasingly eco-friendly.

From packages to disposable cups, from cutlery to bags, the packaging of more and more products is changing in a decidedly green way.

The food sector is leading the way in terms of attention to sustainability, on both the consumer and on the producers and distributors sides. It is no coincidence that more and more retailers are investing in sustainable materials and working to reduce the use of plastic.

In this context, paper and cartonboard play a central role and, fortunately, Italy is one of the countries in Europe with the highest rate of recycling of board and paper. “The urban collection of paper and cartonboard, which stands at 3.5 million tons, has been able to compensate for the shortage of virgin fibres,” says Carlo Montalbetti, General Director of Comieco, the Italian consortium for the recovery and recycling of fiber-based packaging. “Almost 60% of the national paper and board production is made using recycled fibers”.

The wellness sector, as well as fashion and luxury also invest on reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging. This is an interesting choice, especially considering that – according to a study by Comieco – in 2020 the “store” preferred by citizens is the Web and that about 70% of those who buy online are willing to spend more for “green” shopping.
